18 Injured in Another Gateway Bus Crash on Kisoro-Kabale Highway

At least 18 people were injured in a serious road accident involving a Gateway Bus on Tuesday morning along the Kisoro-Kabale highway.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:50 AM at Chanakye Red Corner in Kanaba Sub-county, Kisoro District. The Scania bus, registration number UBK 804Y, was traveling from Kabale to Kisoro with about 60 passengers on board.

According to preliminary police reports, the driver—Julius Owoyesigire, 40, a resident of Nyabihoko in Ntungamo District—lost control of the vehicle while descending a slope near Chanakye Trading Centre. The brakes allegedly failed, and the driver was unable to navigate a sharp bend, causing the bus to overturn.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident, reporting that 15 passengers sustained minor injuries, while three others were seriously injured. Among the victims were residents from Kisoro, Mubende, Kampala, Tororo, Entebbe, Kanungu, and other parts of Uganda—including a 9-year-old girl and an 8-month-old infant.

Responding officers, led by ASP Michael Kushaba, visited the scene, conducted a sketch plan, and coordinated rescue operations. The injured were transported to nearby health facilities for treatment, while the bus was towed to Kisoro Central Police Station for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

Preliminary investigations point to brake failure and overspeeding as the likely causes of the accident. Further inquiries are ongoing.

This is the second Gateway Bus accident reported within three days. On Sunday, May 25th, another Gateway Bus (registration number UBM 707X) crashed in Muhanga, Rukiga District. In that incident, all 62 passengers survived, though many sustained injuries.
