Minister Dismisses Concerns Over UEDCL Transition

Minister Ruth Nankabirwa has addressed concerns about the transition of Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) from Umeme, stating that preparations for the takeover have begun. The concession agreement between Umeme and UEDCL was set to end after 20 years, and the government has started transitioning operations.

Nankabirwa emphasized the government’s commitment to extending power to all rural areas in Uganda. The Electricity Access Scale-Up Project, sponsored by the World Bank, aims to prioritize free electricity connections for homes near installed transmission poles. This initiative seeks to expedite implementation and support value addition processes in rural communities.

Some notable aspects of the government’s plan include:

  • Electricity Access Scale-Up Project: Prioritizing free electricity connections for homes near installed transmission poles.
  • Rural Electrification: Finalizing plans to reconnect hydroelectric power to all rural communities across Uganda.
  • Government Commitment: Ensuring comprehensive power coverage in all government health facilities, local government units, and parishes.

Nankabirwa’s ministry has also been working to address vandalism of electricity infrastructure, which has resulted in significant losses. The government has set up an inter-agency operation to ensure the security and safety of electricity infrastructure across the country.
