Electoral Commission’s Voter Registration Display: A Step Towards Transparent Elections

The Electoral Commission’s (EC) initiative to display the voters’ register ahead of the 2026 polls is a significant step towards ensuring the integrity and transparency of the electoral process. This exercise, which commenced on April 25 and will run until May 15 for the National Voters Register, and May 8 for Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Registers, provides citizens with an opportunity to verify their registration details, raise objections, or report discrepancies.

The display of the voters’ register is crucial in ensuring the accuracy and inclusivity of the electoral process. By allowing citizens to review their registration details, the EC can identify and rectify any errors or inconsistencies, thereby preventing potential disputes during the elections. Moreover, this exercise promotes transparency, as citizens can hold the EC accountable for maintaining an accurate and up-to-date voters’ register.

For youth registration, eligible individuals must be aged 18 and above but below 30 years as of the registration cut-off date. Older persons registration is open to those aged 60 years or older.
Any disputes or objections arising from the voter registration process will be addressed by Parish/Ward Tribunals. These tribunals comprise local community elders and members nominated in consultation with political parties, appointed by the area magistrate.

To facilitate a smooth process, display officers will be present at all polling stations daily, including weekends, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. This presence is especially crucial for voters affected by the polling station reorganisation exercise, ensuring that they can access assistance and resolve any issues related to their registration

The Electoral Commission’s voter registration display exercise is a vital component of the electoral process. By promoting transparency, accuracy, and inclusivity, the EC is taking significant steps towards ensuring the integrity of the 2026 polls. As citizens, it is essential to participate in this exercise, verifying our registration details and reporting any discrepancies. By doing so, we can contribute to a credible and transparent electoral process that reflects the will of the people.
