Uganda’s Aviation Boom: Entebbe Airport Sees Significant Growth in Passenger Traffic

Entebbe International Airport has experienced a significant increase in passenger numbers, defying initial expectations of a bumpy start to 2025. In January 2025, the airport recorded 216,740 international passengers, surpassing the 194,563 passengers recorded in January 2024. This growth can be attributed to several factors, including the expansion of Uganda Airlines, the introduction of new air operators, and the country’s thriving tourism sector.

The rise in passenger traffic is a testament to Uganda’s growing tourism industry, which has seen a notable uptick in recent years. The country’s stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and friendly people have made it an attractive destination for tourists. The increase in passenger numbers is also expected to have a positive impact on the economy, generating revenue and creating jobs.

The introduction of new air operators like Kush Air, Premier Airlines, and Flynas has expanded air connectivity and increased accessibility to Entebbe International Airport. Uganda Airlines’ expansion on new routes has also contributed to the growth in passenger traffic. These developments are expected to further boost the country’s tourism industry and economy.

January 2025 was the second-highest month for passenger traffic in the airport’s history, with December 2024 recording the highest number of passengers at 222,317. The airport has also seen a rise in cargo handling, with 67,731 metric tonnes of cargo recorded in 2024, up from 59,073 metric tonnes in 2023. These statistics demonstrate the airport’s growing importance as a regional hub and its potential for continued growth and development.

In conclusion, Entebbe International Airport’s growth in passenger traffic is a positive development for Uganda’s economy and tourism industry. The airport’s expansion and the introduction of new air operators are expected to further boost the country’s connectivity and attract more tourists.
