Counsel Eron Kiiza Granted Bail: A New Chapter in His Legal Battle

Counsel Eron Kiiza has been granted bail with a UGX 20 million cash bond and must deposit his passport with the court. He was sentenced to nine months in prison for contempt of court by the General Court Martial on January 7, 2025, while representing Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale.

Background of the Case
Kiiza’s troubles began when he was blocked from accessing the bar by armed military personnel in military police attire. The General Court Martial, chaired by Brigadier Robert Freeman Mugabe, found Kiiza guilty of contempt of court.

Appeal and Bail Application
Kiiza has appealed his conviction and sentence in the High Court Criminal Division in Kampala, citing the General Court Martial’s error in law and fact. His bail application was initially opposed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Jane Frances Abodo, who argued that Kiiza’s sureties were not substantial.

Conditions of Bail
To secure his release, Kiiza must meet the following conditions:

  • Pay a UGX 20 million cash bond
  • Deposit his passport with the court
  • Ensure his sureties are acceptable to the court

Reaction to the Bail Grant
The bail grant has brought relief to Kiiza and his supporters, who have been advocating for his release. The case has sparked debate about the treatment of civilians in military courts and the role of lawyers in advocating for their clients’ rights.
