The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Troop Deployment: A Critical Analysis

By Cathy Mirembe

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has been actively deploying troops in various regions, both within and outside Uganda’s borders. These deployments are aimed at maintaining regional stability, combating terrorism, and promoting peace. This essay provides an overview of recent UPDF troop deployments, ongoing missions, and their implications.

One of the recent notable deployments is the UPDF’s consideration to withdraw its troops from Lubero town to pursue Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) remnants in Eastern DRC, particularly in North Kivu and Ituri provinces (Daily Monitor, 2023). This move is part of the ongoing Operation Shujaa, a joint military offensive with the Congolese army (FARDC) against the ADF insurgents in Eastern DRC since November 2021 (The East African, 2021).

Another significant deployment is the UPDF commandos sent to Juba, South Sudan, on March 11, 2025, to support the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) in the current crisis (Sudan Tribune, 2025). This deployment underscores Uganda’s commitment to regional stability and peace.

The UPDF has been participating in various ongoing missions, including Operation Shujaa and peacekeeping efforts in Somalia. The UPDF troops recently completed a year-long deployment in Somalia, demonstrating their dedication to promoting peace and stability in the region (The East African, 2022).

The UPDF troop deployments have significant implications for regional stability, national security, and Uganda’s international relations. On one hand, these deployments demonstrate Uganda’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. On the other hand, they also pose challenges, including the risk of casualties, financial burdens, and potential backlash from opposing forces.

The UPDF troop deployments are a critical aspect of Uganda’s regional security strategy. While these deployments pose challenges, they also demonstrate Uganda’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. As the UPDF continues to play a vital role in regional security, it is essential to monitor the implications of these deployments and adjust strategies accordingly.
