Eid al-Fitr Celebrations in Uganda

In Uganda, Eid al-Fitr is a public holiday, allowing Muslims to come together and celebrate with family and friends. The festivities typically include:

  • Special Prayers: Congregational prayers at mosques, like the one at Bukoto Mosque, are a central aspect of Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
  • Feasting and Gift-Giving: Muslims share meals and exchange gifts, strengthening social bonds and spreading joy.
  • Charity and Generosity: Many Ugandans use this opportunity to give to the poor, embodying the spirit of Zakat, one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Government Recognition

The Ugandan government has recognized the significance of Eid al-Fitr, declaring public holidays to accommodate the celebrations. This year, Eid al-Fitr fell on Sunday, March 30, 2025, while in 2026, it will be celebrated on July 19.
