What Ugandans Need to Know About Umeme’s Exit and Yaka’s Continuation

On March 31, 2025, Umeme will officially exit Uganda’s energy sector. However, Ugandans will still be able to use Yaka, the government-owned prepaid electricity system, without disruption. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development reassures customers that all assets, including Yaka meters, will continue to function smoothly after Umeme’s departure.

Yaka units can still be purchased through mobile telecoms like MTN and Airtel, as well as FINTECH platforms. While the Umeme Touch Pay platform will be decommissioned, the Yaka service will remain fully operational, ensuring a seamless transition for customers.

Importantly, any unused Yaka units purchased before March 31, 2025, will remain valid. The Ministry confirmed that pre-purchased units will not expire, and customers won’t lose any remaining bala

  • No Change in Meter Numbers: UEDCL, the company taking over the service, will maintain the same meter numbers, ensuring continuity for customers.
  • Service Centers Remain Open: UEDCL will continue to operate the same service centers and offices, including the 26 Umeme-owned offices, with agreements in place for those still operated by landlords. There will be no disruption in accessing support or information.
  • Stable Tariffs: Tariffs will remain unchanged, as they are set by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA). UEDCL cannot alter the rates, ensuring predictable costs for customers.
  • No New Service Fees: UEDCL will not introduce new service fees. All fees will remain part of the approved tariff structure by ERA, with no increases for customers.
  • Postpaid Customers: The transition will not affect postpaid customers’ payment systems. Payments can still be made through existing channels, and UEDCL is committed to ensuring a smooth transition to new systems.
  • Customer Support: UEDCL will continue to offer customer support through various digital platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, X, and YouTube.

As Umeme exits Uganda’s energy sector, Ugandans can be confident that their electricity services will continue without disruption. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has ensured that the transition to UEDCL will be smooth, with no loss of service, meter numbers, or prepaid units. Customers will retain access to the same Yaka purchasing, payment, and support channels.
