Today Marks 10 Years Since the Assassination of Joan Kagezi

Joan Namazzi Kagezi was a renowned Ugandan lawyer and prosecutor who tragically lost her life, she was assassinated at Kiwaatule on March 30, 2015, sent shockwaves through Uganda. As the Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, she was a key figure in the country’s justice system, leading high-profile cases against terrorists and war criminal. Her death, which occurred while she was driving home from work in Najjeera, a suburb of Kampala, remains a mystery.

Despite initial reports that her killing might be linked to her work on the 2010 Kampala bombings case, no suspects have been charged in court, and the case remains unsolved. However, in 2023, President Yoweri Museveni revealed that several suspects, including Kibuuka John, Masajjage John, Kissekka Dan, and Nasur Abdalla, had been arrested in connection with her murder.

Kagezi’s legacy as a fearless prosecutor continues to inspire many. Her work on high-profile cases, such as the prosecution of Thomas Kwoyelo, a former Lord’s Resistance Army commander, demonstrated her commitment to justice.
