Celebrating International Women’s Day: Honoring the Achievements of Ugandan Women

Today, as we celebrate International Women’s Day, we recognize the trailblazing achievements of women around the world who have shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for future generations. In Uganda, we honor the bravery and determination of women like Yvonne Namaganda, who tragically lost her life in a dormitory fire at Budo Junior School, and Dorcus Inzikuru, a renowned track and field athlete who has made history in the steeplechase.

Yvonne’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of women and girls everywhere. Despite the danger, she risked her own life to rescue six of her classmates, and her bravery has inspired countless others.

Dorcus Inzikuru, born on February 2, 1982, in Vurra, Arua District, has proven herself to be a force to be reckoned with in the world of athletics. She made headlines by winning the inaugural world title in women’s 3000m steeplechase, as well as the first Commonwealth title in the event. Coached by renowned Renato Canova, Inzikuru’s determination and hard work have paid off, inspiring countless young women and girls to pursue their dreams in sports.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we honor the legacies of Yvonne and Dorcus, and recognize the progress made towards gender equality and the ongoing efforts needed to ensure women and girls have equal opportunities to succeed. We celebrate the strength, resilience, and determination of women everywhere, and continue to push for a more just and equitable world. Happy International Women’s Day!
