Surviving the Unthinkable : Journalist Charles Bukenya Muvawala Rescued After Abduction

Charles Bukenya Muvawala, a renowned journalist and Vice President of the Ugandan North American Association (UNAA), has been rescued after being abducted by unknown assailants from Nakulabye in Kampala City. Muvawala, a dual citizen of the US and Uganda, was reportedly dumped near Kigoya landing site in Buliisa district, Western Uganda, but was found by a sinotruck driver who saw a strange, frail, and helpless man in the swamp.

Muvawala’s abduction sparked widespread outrage, with opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, condemning the incident and linking it to the increasing wave of abductions targeting opposition figures and Ugandan nationals in the diaspora. The US Embassy was also urged to investigate the potential case of a missing US citizen in Uganda.

Muvawala is a well-known figure in Ugandan circles, both at home and abroad, and has been an active leader within the Ugandan diaspora community in the US ². His rescue is a welcome relief, but the incident highlights the ongoing concerns about enforced disappearances and abductions in Uganda.
