Museveni Celebrates Kategaya’s Contribution to Uganda’s Politics

President Museveni on 6 March 2025 honored the late Eriya Kategaya, a trailblazer in Uganda’s politics, at a memorial service in Kololo. Museveni praised Kategaya’s commitment to patriotic politics and his role in shaping Uganda’s political landscape.

Kategaya, who served as Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Community Affairs, passed away in March 2013. His legacy continues to be celebrated, with many remembering him as a dedicated nationalist and Pan-Africanist.

At the memorial service, Museveni cautioned against identity-based politics, which he believes hinders national progress. He reflected on the 1960s, when Kategaya helped them recognize the flaws in the politics of identity practiced by UPC, DP, and Kabaka Yekka.

Museveni also encouraged leaders to appreciate individual strengths and maintain clear objectives in governance. He noted that Kategaya’s unique approach brought valuable contacts and networks to their efforts.

Two books were launched at the memorial: a tribute book featuring reflections from 20 distinguished individuals, and Joan Kategaya’s memoir, “Reflections of Resilience.”

Vice President Jessica Alupo praised Kategaya as a dedicated nationalist and Pan-Africanist, highlighting his role in guiding the cabinet on strategic policies. Kategaya’s family, including his widow, Mrs. Joan Kategaya, and daughter, Dr. Juliet Kategaya, expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received since his passing.

They remembered him as a passionate and strategic community leader who taught them the importance of planning ahead. The memorial service was attended by various dignitaries, including the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni.
