20-Month Countdown: Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium On Track For Completion

Construction Progress

The construction of the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium is progressing steadily, with 90% of the earthworks already completed. This significant milestone marks a crucial step towards the realization of the multi-sports complex.

Project Overview

The $129 million project was handed over to Egyptian construction firm SAMCO in December. The company is working tirelessly to ensure the stadium’s completion within the stipulated 20-month timeframe.

Stadium Features

Upon completion, the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium will boast an impressive array of facilities, including:

  1. 20,000-seat main stadium: A state-of-the-art stadium with a seating capacity of 20,000 spectators.
  2. 2,000-seat indoor sports arena: A modern indoor arena that can accommodate 2,000 spectators.
  3. Full-sized football field: A regulation-sized football field with modern changing rooms.
  4. Semi-Olympic 25-meter swimming pool: A world-class swimming pool that meets international standards.
  5. Outdoor courts: Outdoor courts for various sports, including basketball, netball, volleyball, and badminton.
  6. 1,000-vehicle parking facility: A spacious parking facility that can accommodate up to 1,000 vehicles.
  7. 60-bed hostel for athletes: A comfortable hostel that can accommodate 60 athletes.

AFCON 2027 Preparations

The Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium is a critical component of Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Uganda will co-host the tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

Upgrades and Economic Impact

To support the stadium’s accessibility, the government plans to upgrade Gulu International Airport. This upgrade will ensure that the stadium meets the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) requirement that all host venues must be within 200 km of an international airport.

The stadium’s construction is expected to have a profound economic impact on the Lango Sub-Region. Once completed, the stadium will transform the area into a sporting hub, offering opportunities for young athletes and boosting local economic growth.
