February 25, 1964: The Day Muhammad Ali Became a Boxing Icon

Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, made history on February 25, 1964, by defeating Sonny Liston to become the world heavyweight boxing champion for the first time. This monumental upset took place in Miami Beach, Florida.

At just 22 years old, Clay was a significant underdog, with odds of 8:1 against him. However, he proved his doubters wrong by employing his quick wit, speed, and unorthodox boxing style to outmaneuver Liston.

Clay’s victory was not just a testament to his boxing prowess but also a result of his clever psychological tactics. He had been taunting Liston for months leading up to the fight, which many believe contributed to Liston’s underperformance.

The fight itself was a thrilling spectacle, with Clay’s constant movement and jabbing leaving Liston frustrated and unable to land a decisive blow. When Liston failed to answer the bell for the seventh round, Clay was declared the winner by technical knockout.

This iconic victory marked the beginning of Muhammad Ali’s illustrious career as a boxing legend and social icon.
