Former Inspector General Of Police, John Cossy Odomel, Has Passed Away

As announced by Captain Mike Mukula on his X handle. Odomel served as the IGP from 1992 to 1998 and is remembered for his contributions to modernizing and professionalizing the Ugandan Police Force.

During his tenure, Odomel implemented reforms aimed at making the police force more professional and efficient, introducing technocratic approaches to policing and improving the operational capacity of the force. His leadership had a lasting impact on the structure and functioning of Uganda’s police service.

Odomel’s death comes shortly after the passing of his wife, Mary Magdalene Odomel, in September 2024. Tributes have begun to pour in, recognizing Odomel’s contribution to Uganda’s security and governance.

John Cossy Odomel, the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Uganda, has passed away. The news was announced by Captain Mike Mukula on his X handle.

Odomel was succeeded the late John Kisembo from 1999 to 2001, and from 2001 to 2005, the office was occupied by IGP Katumba Wamala. During his tenure, Odomel implemented various reforms aimed at modernizing and professionalizing the Ugandan Police Force.

His contributions to the country’s security and governance have been recognized, and tributes have begun to pour in. Odomel’s death comes shortly after the passing of his wife, Mary Magdalene Odomel, in September 2024.
