Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko Chosen as the 7th Bishop of West Buganda Diocese

In a momentous decision, the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda has elected Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko as the new Bishop of West Buganda Diocese, making him the seventh person to hold this position.

The election took place on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at a gathering held at Acaki Hotel in Kitgum Diocese. Rev. Canon Nsereko’s consecration and enthronement are scheduled for March 30, 2025, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako, in Masaka District.

He will be stepping into the role previously held by the outgoing bishop, taking on the spiritual leadership of the diocese, which spans across various parts of central Uganda.

Born on July 5, 1965, in Bbira Naakuwadde, Busiro, Wakiso District, Rev. Canon Nsereko’s faith journey has been both transformative and inspiring. His personal commitment to Christ began on May 30, 1993, during his time at Namukozi in Mityana Diocese.

His ordination as a deacon came on December 9, 1989, at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Namukozi, and just a year later, on December 10, 1990, he was priested at the same cathedral. Over the years, his devotion and leadership led to his elevation to the position of Canon on January 17, 2010, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako, in West Buganda Diocese.

Currently, Rev. Canon Nsereko serves as the Archdeacon of Kakoma Archdeaconry and the Vicar of St. John’s Kakoma Church of Uganda in West Buganda Diocese. His previous leadership roles include Provost of St. Paul’s Cathedral Kako, Sub-Dean, and Archdeacon of Masaka Archdeaconry.

Rev. Canon Nsereko’s academic achievements include a Bachelor of Divinity from Uganda Christian University and a Diploma in Primary Education from the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo. His strong academic background, coupled with years of dedicated service, has equipped him to lead with wisdom and vision.

Rev. Canon Nsereko is married to Mrs. Sarah Nsereko, and together they are proud parents to three children.
