The Guitar Maestro’s Final Bow: Rest in Peace Ssenkebejje

Born on December 7, 1944, in Jinja, Uganda, Tony Williams Ssenkebejje’s musical journey spans over four decades. His passion for music was ignited at a young age, and he began performing with local groups in Kampala.

The Early Years

Ssenkebejje’s music career took off when he joined the National Youth Club in Kampala, led by Francis Odida. He soon became part of the cabaret arm called The Crazy Gang, which later evolved into The Darling Brothers. This group consisted of talented musicians, including Edward Masembe (guitar), Paul Mubiru (bassist), Billy Mbowa Kawoya (singer), Clyde Mayanja (organizer), and Sammy Kawuma (drummer and band leader).

Rise to Fame

In 1963, Ssenkebejje recorded his first song at the AGS studios in Nairobi, with the help of Freddie Kanyike and Billy Mbowa Kawoya. This marked the beginning of his successful music career. The Darling Brothers later transformed into The Cranes, with Ssenkebejje as the rhythm guitarist.

Musical Exploration

Ssenkebejje’s musical journey took him to various bands and collaborations. He joined the Lake Quartet, which performed at Lake Victoria in Entebbe. With this band, he became a master guitarist soloist and recorded his famous Luganda success “Jukira”, published by the Kagaabe label.

International Collaborations

In 1974, Ssenkebejje moved to Kenya, where he played rhythm guitar with a resident band in a Nairobi nightclub. He later joined the Les Noir, a Congolese band, and The Spartans band in Mombasa as a solo guitarist. Ssenkebejje also collaborated with The Mombasa Vikings, a group of musicians from the Seychelles.

Afrigo Band and Beyond

In 1990, Ssenkebejje joined the renowned Afrigo Band. Four years later, he decided to pursue an independent path and formed his own group, Simba Ngoma, with Sammy Murungi (keyboard), Rachael Asiimwe (singer), and his wife Rachael Ssenkebejje (singer). After Simba Ngoma disbanded, Ssenkebejje and his wife reformed as Simba Sounds, featuring a talented lineup of musicians.

Legacy

Tony Williams Ssenkebejje’s contributions to Ugandan music and beyond are immeasurable. His dedication to his craft, passion for innovation, and commitment to collaboration have inspired generations of musicians. As a master guitarist, singer, and composer, Ssenkebejje’s legacy continues to resonate throughout the music world. May his soul rest in eternal life.
