Murder of Delcat Idengo A Bold Voice Silenced Amid Congo’s Turmoil

On Thursday, Congolese musician Delcat Idengo was tragically shot while filming a music video in Goma. Known for his politically charged songs, Idengo had recently released a track condemning both the M23 rebels and ADF as forces of occupation in the region.

Idengo, dressed in military fatigues for the video shoot, was attacked near Kilijiwe and killed instantly by a gunshot to the head. His death came shortly after his release from Munzenze prison, near Goma, an area controlled by M23 forces.

A vocal critic of the government, Idengo used his music to challenge corruption, social injustice, and the impact of armed groups. His notable works, such as Politiciens Escrocs and Pays des Prisonniers, earned him multiple arrests under President Felix Tshisekedi’s regime. His passing has left a profound impact on North Kivu, where he was seen as a fearless advocate for change.

Idengo’s murder has reignited concerns about the dangers faced by activists in DR Congo. Local groups have criticized the killing as senseless, urging caution in the face of such violence.

The timing of his death is particularly significant as the M23 rebels have recently seized control of Goma, further intensifying tensions. Despite claims of restored stability, Idengo’s death highlights the continued repression in the region, where dissenting voices are silenced by force.
