George Weah Opens Up About Racism in Europe, Says He’s Not Proud of Ballon d’Or Award

George Weah’s statement highlights his personal struggles with racism in Europe, particularly during his time as a footballer. Despite winning the Ballon d’Or award in 1995, Weah expresses his disappointment and hurt over the racist treatment he faced.

He recalls a specific headline from La Gazzetta dello Sport, which he felt was demeaning and racist. Weah also shares that even within his own team, AC Milan, he faced mocking and racist comments about Africa.

Weah draws comparisons to other accomplished African footballers, such as Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o, who also achieved great success in European football. However, he feels that they, too, were denied the recognition they deserved due to racism.

Weah concludes by emphasizing that true value lies not in awards or accolades but in being a good-hearted person who treats others with respect and kindness. His statement serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles with racism and the importance of promoting humanity and equality.

George Weah is a Liberian politician and retired footballer who served as the 25th President of Liberia from 2018 to 2024. Born on October 1, 1966, Weah had a distinguished football career, playing for clubs like Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea, and Manchester City.

Weah’s football achievements are impressive:

  • African Footballer of the Year: He won this award three times, in 1989, 1994, and 1995.
  • African Player of the Century: Weah received this honor in 1996.
  • Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year: He won both awards in 1995, becoming the first and only African player to achieve this feat.

After retiring from football, Weah transitioned to politics. He ran for president in 2005 but lost to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Weah later became a senator in 2014 and eventually won the presidency in 2017, defeating Vice President Joseph Boakai. However, he lost his re-election bid to Boakai in 2023.
