President Museveni Launches Construction of Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium Paving the Way for AFCON 2027

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accompanied by First Lady Janet Museveni, today launched the construction of the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City. The US$ 129 million project, set to be completed in 20 months, is being built by Egyptian firms SAMCO National Construction and Khater Sports.

During the ceremony, President Museveni addressed political claims that the stadium’s construction was tied to the upcoming elections. He clarified that the delay was due to the need to prioritize essential services like peace, healthcare, and education, not a lack of interest in sports.

“We focused on survival first—food, security, education—before sports,” he said, urging the public to reject politicians who promise everything at once

The stadium will play a central role in Uganda’s preparations to co-host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027 with Kenya and Tanzania. Museveni emphasized the importance of completing the stadium in time for the tournament, alongside other regional infrastructure like the Hoima Stadium.

“We are committed to delivering the necessary facilities for AFCON, and Akii-Bua is a key part of this,” he added.

First Lady Janet Museveni also expressed support for the project, praising her husband’s dedication to sports. She highlighted other ongoing infrastructure projects, including Hoima City Stadium and Mandela Stadium renovations, as part of a broader plan to enhance sports facilities across Uganda.

Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, as well as other officials, also attended the event, which celebrated both the stadium’s significance and the region’s passion for sports.
