Muhammad Ssegirinya: A Life of Resilience, Determination, and Service

Muhammad Ssegirinya, formerly known as Richard Ssegirinya, was a Ugandan politician and champion of the underprivileged. Born in 1988 in Butale, Kadugala, Masaka District, Uganda, Ssegirinya’s life journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering commitment to serving others.

Early Life and Education

Ssegirinya’s early life was marked by poverty, which forced him to sell sugarcane from his peasant father’s farm. Despite these challenges, he pursued his education, attending Kadugala Primary School and later Kaddugala Secondary School and Pimba Secondary School in Kyebando.

Entry into Politics

Ssegirinya’s entry into politics began with phone calls to radio talk shows, where he’d raise concerns and establish himself as the “voice of Kyebando”. His determination and ambition led him to contest for various political positions, including:

  • Councillor LC5 for Kawempe North in 2016, which he won as an independent candidate despite being denied a party card by his mother party, FDC.
  • Member of Parliament for Kawempe North in 2021 on the National Unity Platform ticket.

Commitment to Service

Throughout his political career, Ssegirinya has been known for his commitment to serving others. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he used his social media platforms to fundraise for his constituents struggling to access food. His dedication to his community has earned him the nickname “Mr. Update”.

Challenges and Perseverance

Ssegirinya’s success was not without challenges. He faced:

  • Court cases questioning his academic credentials.
  • Arrest and imprisonment for two years.
  • Health complications, including skin cancer, liver disorders, and severe infections.

Legacy

After a long battle with health complications, Ssegirinya passed away on January 9, 2025. His legacy, however, lives on as a testament to his resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to serving others.

  • Vigil: Today, Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 4 pm, a vigil will be held at the NUP party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, where supporters and family members will pay their respects.
  • Tribute in Parliament: On Friday, January 10, 2025, a special session will be held in Parliament to pay tribute to Ssegirinya, starting at 9 am.
  • Prayers: After the parliamentary session, special prayers will be held at Mbogo Mosque in Kawempe.
  • Body Transfer: Ssegirinya’s body will then be taken to his home in Kasangati for further tributes.
  • Burial: On Sunday, January 12, 2025, Ssegirinya will be laid to rest in Masaka District.
