US Imposes Sanctions on Sudan’s RSF Leader for Waging Brutal War

In a significant move, the United States government has imposed sanctions on Mohammad Hamdan Daglo Mousa (Hemedti), the leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), for his role in perpetuating a brutal war that has killed thousands of innocent civilians.

The sanctions, imposed by the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), also target seven UAE-based companies and one individual linked to the RSF.

These entities have been accused of providing financial and military support to the RSF, exacerbating the conflict in Sudan.

Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan

The conflict in Sudan has resulted in devastating humanitarian consequences, with over 11.5 million people internally displaced and 3.2 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries. The United Nations has described the situation as a “humanitarian crisis of staggering proportions.”

Sanctions Implications

The sanctions imposed by the US government aim to hold Hemedti and the RSF accountable for their actions. All property and interests in property of the designated persons are blocked, and US persons are prohibited from engaging in transactions with them.

The sanctions also target Hemedti’s business network, including Capital Tap Holding L.L.C., a UAE-based holding company that has provided financial and military support to the RSF. Other sanctioned entities include Creative Python L.L.C., Al Zumoroud, and Al Yaqoot Gold & Jewellers L.L.C.

US Commitment to Accountability

The US government has reiterated its commitment to holding accountable those responsible for human rights abuses in Sudan.

“The Treasury Department remains committed to using every tool available to hold accountable those responsible for violating the human rights of the Sudanese people,” said Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo
