Kayihura’s Road to Redemption? Former IGP Meets Museveni in Rwakitura

Story By TV10 Deep State Desk

President Yoweri Museveni recently met with former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura, and his family at his country home in Rwakitura. This meeting has sparked widespread speculation about Kayihura’s potential return to the political scene.

Gen Kayihura, a renowned NRA bush war general, has had a storied career in Uganda’s military and police forces. Born on December 26, 1955, in Kisoro District, Kayihura joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) in 1982, after graduating from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.

Kayihura’s meeting with President Museveni is seen as a significant development, given their complicated past. In 2018, Kayihura was sacked as IGP and later arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder of police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi. He was also facing charges of failure to protect war materials and aiding and abetting kidnapping.

The meeting has been interpreted as a potential olive branch extended by President Museveni to Kayihura, who has been a key figure in the National Resistance Movement (NRM). Political analysts suggest that this move could be part of Museveni’s efforts to consolidate his base ahead of the 2026 elections.

Gen Kayihura’s family, including his wife Angella Kayihura and their children, were also present at the meeting. The Kayihuras are known to be a close-knit family, with strong ties to the NRM.

While the details of the meeting remain unclear, it is evident that this encounter marks a significant turning point in the complex relationship between President Museveni and Gen Kayihura.
