Museveni dumps Kampala city Director and Deputy over Kiteezi landfill

Kampala September 24–The Ugandan leader, Yoweri Museveni, has sacked three top officials of the Kampala Capital City Authority KCCA, the Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka, her Deputy, Engineer Luyimbaazi and the Director for Public Health, Dr. Okello, over the Kiteezi Landfill disaster that claimed the lives of about fifty people. 34 bodies were retrieved from the garbage and over 20 others are yet to be retrieved.

Museveni who based his decision on the findings of the Inspector General of Government IGG report on the Kiteezi landfill disaster, also directed the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, and other crime management agencies to “thoroughly investigate the matter further focusing on the angle of criminal negligence associated the distressing event.”

In a statement issued Tuesday September 24 by the office of the President Press Unit, Museveni said “The IGG’s report clearly outlined the severe oversight and negligence exhibited by these officials.”

The President also directed the Public Service Commission to advertise the positions of the Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director and Director of Public Health, to appoint new officials within three months.

He also tasked the Minister for Kampala with the responsibility of advising the president on the interim appointments for the positions to ensure that operations within KCCA continue without disruption until permanent replacements are in place.

The Kiteezi landfill slid at the beginning of last month, August, burying over 50 people and displacing several families many of whom are still living in makeshift tents around the landfill while others are camping around the landfill with a hope of getting bodies of their loved ones retrieved.
