Kampala Landfill Disaster: President Museveni Sacks Top KCCA Officials

Kampala, Uganda – In a swift and decisive move, President Yoweri Museveni has fired three top Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officials following the devastating Kiteezi landfill disaster. The tragedy, which claimed 21 lives, exposed severe oversight and negligence within the authority.

The Inspector General of Government’s (IGG) report revealed shocking lapses in management and supervision at the landfill site. The investigation found that KCCA officials ignored repeated warnings from Makerere University researchers about the risks of the landfill’s instability.

President Museveni has dismissed the following KCCA officials:

Executive Director: Mrs. Dorothy Kisaka.

Deputy Executive Director: Engineer David Luyimbazi.

Director of Public Health: Dr. Daniel Okello.

Their removal is seen as a necessary step to address the systemic failures that led to the disaster. In addition to the dismissals, the government has:Ordered the Prime Minister to coordinate evacuation efforts and provide relief to affected families.Announced plans to decommission the Kiteezi landfill and relocate it to a new site in Mukono.

Residents near the landfill have welcomed the government’s actions, but demand more accountability. “We’ve been complaining about the landfill for years, but our concerns were ignored,” said local resident, Jane Nalwanga. “We hope this tragedy will bring real change.”

KCCA has apologized for the tragedy and promised cooperation with the government’s investigations. “We acknowledge our responsibility and commit to learning from this tragedy,” said a KCCA spokesperson.

The government has assured the public that those responsible will face consequences. As the investigation continues, Ugandans await further action to ensure accountability and prevent similar disasters.
