Major Defection Rocks Uganda’s Opposition as 10 NUP MPs Set to Join Besigye’s PFF

In a shocking move, over 10 Members of Parliament from the National Unity Platform (NUP) are poised to defect from the party, citing internal divisions and a toxic environment that has hindered their ability to drive meaningful change.

The lawmakers, led by Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana, have remained neutral in the ongoing factional wars between the Mathias Mpuuga and Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) camps. They are expected to join forces with Dr. Kizza Besigye’s People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), marking a significant shift in Uganda’s opposition politics.

Ssewanyana revealed that the defectors have had enough of being caught in the crossfire between the warring factions, which has tarnished their reputation and stifled their political progress. “We’ve been stuck in this toxic environment for far too long, and it’s hindered our ability to drive meaningful change,” he lamented.

The defecting MPs include Hellen Nakimuli, Joseph Ssewungu Gonzaga, Flavia Kalule Nabagabe, Frank Kabuye, Hassan Kirumira, Denis Sekabira, Robert Ssekitoleko, and Allan Mayanja, among others. However, they are waiting for PFF’s official registration and the one-year mark before the next elections, as mandated by law, to make their switch.

This development highlights the deep-seated fragmentation within Uganda’s opposition parties, underscoring the daunting task of maintaining unity in a highly polarized political landscape. As the dust settles, observers will be watching closely to see how this seismic shift impacts the fight for democratic reforms in Uganda.
