Uganda’s Renowned Lawyer and Former Attorney General, Apollo Kiddu Makubuya, Passes Away at 75

Professor Apollo Kiddu Makubuya, a distinguished lawyer, academic, and former Attorney General of Uganda, has succumbed to a lengthy illness, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to the legal profession and public service. His passing on Monday morning at Nakaseero Hospital in Kampala marks the end of an era for Uganda’s legal fraternity.

Makubuya’s illustrious career spanned academia, law, and politics. He was a respected lecturer and dean at Makerere University’s Law School, where he taught and mentored generations of lawyers. His expertise in law earned him a First Class Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University and further degrees from Yale University.

As Attorney General from 2005 to 2011, Makubuya navigated the complexities of Uganda’s politics during a tumultuous period. He played a crucial role in shaping the country’s legal landscape, including the contentious 2005 presidential election. Although his tenure was marked by controversy, including allegations of corruption, Makubuya remained a prominent figure in Ugandan politics.

Throughout his life, Makubuya demonstrated a commitment to public service, serving on various commissions and committees, including the Uganda Constitutional Commission and the Commission of Inquiry into Violations of Human Rights. His contributions to the legal profession and human rights advocacy have left an indelible mark on Uganda’s history.

As news of his passing spreads, tributes pour in from colleagues, friends, and admirers, celebrating Makubuya’s remarkable life, achievements, and dedication to the pursuit of justice. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of lawyers, academics, and public servants.
