Lightning strikes Kololo Transmission towers, puts TV channels off air

Kampala, August 17—Lightning has struck UBC transmission towers at Kololo, putting several Television channels blackout.

The worst affected channels are those of the “Free-to-Air” channels and some Pay TV platforms. Since Thursday evening, customers of free-to-air channels entered the weekend in a blackout.

The lightning which struck Thursday evening during a rainfall, ignited the towers into flames but the Police Fire brigade arrived in time to fight the fire and saved most of the equipment from destruction. The entire impact of the lightening strike on the transmission towers is yet to be established.

A statement issued by the UBC management said “ We regret to inform the public that most free-to-air channels are currently off air due to a lightning strike on our Kololo transmission towers”.

The statement added that UBC was doing everything possible to ensure that Ugandans accessing channels via the free to air arrangement get back to normal service. “Our engineering team is currently working to assess the damage and restore transmission as quickly as possible.”
