Government Extends National ID Validity Amidst Renewal Plans

In a move to ensure continuity of business in Uganda, the government has extended the validity of approximately 15.8 million National IDs set to expire between August 2024 and December 2025 for an additional year . This announcement was made by David Muhoozi, Minister of State for Internal Affairs, during his appearance before Parliament’s Defence and Internal Affairs Committee .

Muhoozi revealed that the extension is intended to facilitate a seamless transition as the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) prepares for the mass enrollment and renewal of National IDs . The initial batch of 15.8 million National IDs, issued in 2014/2015, was set to expire between August 2024 and June 2025 .

This development comes as NIRA gears up for a mass enrollment and renewal exercise, which was initially scheduled to commence in June 2024 . The extension provides a grace period for citizens to renew their National IDs, ensuring uninterrupted access to essential services and business operations.

The government’s decision demonstrates its commitment to minimizing disruptions and guaranteeing the smooth operation of businesses and services in Uganda. As the country moves forward with its National ID renewal plans, citizens are advised to stay informed about the upcoming enrollment and renewal processes.
