NEMA Halts The Degradation Of Nakiyanja Wetland.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has halted the on going degradation of Nakiyanja wetland.

In the statement that was released today by the authority, they said that the decision was made to protect the critical ecosystem at sonde, Kira Municipality.

Nakiyanja is a critical wetland that drain into river Sezibwa which eventually serves the greater Kayunga and Mukono districts.

The Inspectors of NEMA established that the degradation was allegedly occasioned by Ms. Genagri Limited, who was hoodwinking the inspectors with a certificate of approval No. NEMA/EIA/15422 issued to develop mixed residential and commercial structures on a small piece of dry land elsewhere.

The halt was done by a joint technical team from the Ministry of Water and Environment, NEMA and the Environment Protection Police Unit.

The statement also elaborated on the negative effects that would come with the degradation of the wetland like increased flooding, loss of biodiversity and habitat destruction for various species.

NEMA had also indefinitely suspended all approvals and issuance of permits for activities in wetlands on 2nd September 2021 as a way of addressing environment violations.

The authority encouraged all citizens of Uganda to remain vigilant in the pursuit of a clean and sustainable environment.
