EDUCATION:What Has Caused Poor Performance In Science Subjects?

During the release of UCE on 15th Feb 2024 at Nakasero grounds the worst performed subjects in the UCE 2023 are sciences according to the executive secretary of UNEB Mr Dan Odongo .

Less than 20% of the candidates obtained credit pass level in Physics and chemistry and 40% or more unable to pass.

This is all put to the inadequate teaching, manifesting in learners inability to manipulate science apparatus and carry out the procedures prescribed in the examination papers and inter prate any readings or observation that could have made.

There are schools that have no teachers which add to the problem. Most of the malt practice cases at this level are in the practical papers.

The reason to why science subjects are still performed poorly is because the government through the ministry of education and sports has focused on the increment of science teacher’s salary than provision of practical equipment since science subjects are all a bout practicals not theories of which Ugandans are not considering.

In 2017 during the teachers retreat at the state house President Museven promised to increase science teachers salary of which was implemented in 2021. The 300 percent pay rise resulted in a graduate and grade V teachers pay increase to Uganda shillings 4million and 3million up from 1.1M and 796000.

Most of the things outside look nice when inside they are rotten. Increasing teachers salary minus giving them what to use while training and sharpening the next generation is like witting on water.

The Government is busy investing money in things that are not beneficial for the better future of the country than the important thing on the ground that should be done with an immediate effect.

The parliament should approve budget for the construction of science practical laboratories in schools and purchasing science practical equipment to improve in the performance of science subjects and if this is not done there will be no improvement.

In Uganda there is no money to purchase the science practical equipment but there is money for purchasing fuel for the Members of the parliament adding to the much salary they earn and allowance given to different ministries.

Most of the schools in Uganda don’t own a science practical laboratory but instead they are forced to share with a few equipment available with the neighbouring school.

On another had most of the school administrators are focusing on making students pass and excel than understanding what they are being taught which has forced most of the students to focus on the passable subjects (ART SUBJECTS) than science subject and of which is costing most of Ugandans a lot as most of the people are in the areas where they are not supposed to be for example some people in teaching yet they are supposed to be doctors .

It’s unfortunate that most of the people have turned schools from being a public service to business since most of the people are very aware that the excellency you get attracts very many students of which increases the earning which means they are no longer teaching but earning.

The issue of inadequate teachers in schools is also a blame to be considered a crucial issue to worked upon by the ministry of education, in Uganda it’s a perspective that things has to be done on technical know who, that’s connections of which are very limited, this has forced most of the people to do some other work outside their profession.
