Recently, there has been a significant proposal by UWEC to allocate a budget of 10 million for lion breeding. While conservation efforts are crucial, it is important to equally acknowledge the potential negative impacts of some practises within our zoos.
The conservation goals should extend beyond a single species, as our zoos need to address the broader aspect of preserving biodiversity . Unfortunately, certain practises in our zoos are contributing to the decline of several species. It’s essential to prioritise the conversation of endangered species, taking into account their natural habitats and promoting sustainable tourism practises.
As Uganda is known for it’s rich biodiversity, we must focus on protecting and preserving our ecosystems while ensuring the sustainability and responsible management of the tourist industry. Collaborative efforts between conservation organisations, government bodies, and the tourism sector are crucial to finding a balance that aligns with long-term ecological conservation goals.
