HEALTH:The Uganda Kidney Transplant Revolution.

In December 2023 Uganda conducted a successful kidney transplant .This successful procedure had most of medical experts from Kenya and other counterparts from India.

This was seen as a success and a very big improvement in the country as far as health is concerned and this gave patients with kidney problems hope since they have been traveling miles to get this treatment.

This success made the Government to allow at least the first five patients with the end stage renal failure who are on the the dialysis to have kidney transplants from the hospital free of charge before the fee for this life saving procedures is officially declared.

The Government has not taken the position yet on how much it would cost any Ugandan seeking Kidney transplant services at MULAGO National Referral Hospital.

The Government is said not to have set the figures yet on how the one carrying the same procedure should be charged but it’s unfortunate that some of the kidney patients are being charged close to UGX 46 million.

This amount charged is not fair for the common individual who has no permanent source of income.

But the question remains who determines this price, who is supposed to pay for this treatment and who is supposed not to pay.

Though the prime Minister Nabajja is saying that the 46 Million that people are saying is being charged for someone to undergo this procedure is just a false report done by media people.

Chronicle Kidney disease (CKD) is a major cause of mobility and mortality in sub Saharan Africa.

If the Ugandan government and the Ministry of Health is to set a charge, at least let the charges be favourable for all Ugandans because the level of poverty in Uganda is going high, yet people are also toiling to meet the minimal health bills.

In a cross section study conducted in Wakiso district in some years back using the malt stage sampling, data was collected on age, sex, social – economic status, history of alcohol intake, diabetes, hypertension and smoking.

Measurements of blood pressure, weight and height to determine body mass index and investigations including HIV testing, fasting blood sugars, creatinine and urinalysis were also conducted.

A total of 955 participants aged 18_87 years were enrolled into the study and the median age was 31 years and majority 67%were female.

21%had abnormal renal functions with Chronicle Kidney Disease stage one in 6.2%, stage in 12.7% and stage 4 of CKD was in 0% and stage was in 0.1%.

A healthy balanced deity can reduce the risk of kidney disease by keeping the blood pressure and cholesterol at a healthy level. A balanced deity should include plenty of fruits and vegetables aim for at least 5 portions a day and meals that include starchy foods such as potatoes, whole grain bread or pasta.
