Uganda’s Deputy Ambassador to UAE Expelled Amidst Illegal Casino Scandal

In a shocking diplomatic fallout, Uganda’s Deputy Head of Mission to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Henry Mayega, has been expelled from the country along with his entire team. Mayega, who operated out of Dubai, was found to be running an illegal casino business from his office.

The Ugandan government had earlier directed Mayega to return home to explain the circumstances surrounding the consulate’s transformation into a casino. An investigation by the External Security Organisation (ESO) revealed that privately procured gambling machines were shipped under diplomatic cover and operated at the consulate building in Dubai, violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Mayega has been given a short deadline to exit the country and return to Uganda. This incident follows the declaration of Uganda’s High Commissioner to Canada, Joy Ruth Acheng, as “persona non grata” due to alleged “uncouth behaviour.” Acheng is set to be deported on August 21, 2024.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has faced criticism for its handling of diplomatic missions, with concerns raised about the integrity and conduct of Uganda’s representatives abroad. The expulsions and investigations highlight a growing need for accountability and transparency within Uganda’s diplomatic corps.

Diplomats have since expressed concern about the integrity of the report being prepared by the Foreign Affairs officials as the matter concerns Minister Jeje Odongo.
